Home team versus the at-home team

They might not have the skills and experience, but Leominster will have the home team advantage Saturday, Oct. 6, when the Leominster Recreation Department hosts a celebrity flag football game between the New England Patriots Legends Team and the Leominster Recreation Department All-Stars at Doyle Field.

"It should be a lot of fun," said Recreation Director Judith Sumner. "We're all very excited."

Sumner said this fundraising idea was brought to the department by the LPC Corporation out of Framingham. She said other agencies like the Lancaster Fire Department have used the flag football program in the past with great success.

"We've received a lot of community support," she said. "The LPC Corp. has solicited for sponsors and distributed over 2,000 tickets. We have also received a lot of support from the Leominster Pop Warner teams."

Sumner said the event will begin at l p.m. at Doyle Field and will include free autographs, a live play-by-play announcer and a free publication. The Recreation Department will also be selling refreshments like hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and fried dough throughout the day. Sumner said the Legends roster could include such Patriot's greats as Steve DeOssie, Ronny Lippett, Steve Grogan, Max Lane, Roland James, Peter Brock, Scott Zolak, Derick Beasley, Russ Francis and Steve King.

Department member and coach Mario Meza will be coordinating the Recreation Department All-Stars, which will not only include department members but also members of the Leominster Fire and Police Departments.

Recreation Department members Jeff O'Neill and Thomas Bissonnette will be on hand helping with the scorekeeping. The Leominster High School cheerleading team will also be cheering at the event, raising spirits and supporting the teams.

"I hope a lot of people come out to support the department and the teams," said Sumner.

Ticket in advance cost $25 for a family of four, $8 for adults and $5 for children younger than 12 and seniors. Tickets at the gate cost $10 for adults and $5 for children younger than 12 and seniors. Children younger than 3 admitted free. Sumner says any Pop Warner player who attends in a jersey will be admitted into the event free, as well as all members of the LHS football and cheerleading teams. Proceeds will benefit Leominster Recreation Department Flag Football Program and other department youth programs.

Tickets are available at the Leominster Recreation Department office at Barrett Park, off Chestnut Street. For more information, call (978) 534-7529.
