ELPIS (PAPANICOLOU) KARNEGIS, 93

Was a professional knitter; donated to nursing homes

LEOMINSTER - Elpis (Papanicolou) Karnegis, 93, of 44 Boutelle St., died Friday, Sept. 28, 2007, in Holy Trinity Eastern Orthodox Nursing Center, Worcester.

She was born on Feb. 7, 1914, in Wakefield, the daughter of the late John Elia and Mary (Karangias) Papanicolou. She grew up in Lynn and moved to West Stockbridge when she and her husband married.

Together they owned and operated the Karnegis General Store and Package Store. Later, Mrs. Karnegis worked for General Electric in Pittsfield for 10 years before her retirement.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, a past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star in West Stockbridge, the Elpis Society, and a former member of St. George Church in Pittsfield. Mrs. Karnegis was a professional knitter, and knitted lap robes, which she donated to nursing homes. She also enjoyed crocheting and cross-stitching.

Mrs. Karnegis leaves her primary caregivers, her son-in-law, James Woovis and his wife Margaret of Leominster; two granddaughters, Georgia Doucette, wife of the late Robert Doucette of Illinois and Joanna Woovis of Fitchburg; three great-grandchildren, Demetri, Sophia, and Jon-Peter. Her husband, whom she married June 21, 1941, John P. Karnegis, died August 30, 1994. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Elaine Woovis in June 1991, her brothers, Louis Nichols, Nicholas Papanicolou, and her sister, Bessie Andrews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Holy Trinity Eastern Orthodox Nursing Center, 300 Barber Ave., Worcester, MA 01606-2476.
