ROBERT W. BOYDEN, 85 Was master gardener and assisted those in need

LEOMINSTER - Robert W. Boyden, 85, of Leominster, died Monday, Aug. 1, 2011 in Health Alliance Hospital/Leominster, after an illness.

Mr. Boyden was born in Leominster on April 28, 1926, the son of Charles C. and Albertine (Charron) Boyden and had been a lifelong resident.

He was a 1944 graduate of Leominster High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European

Theater. Shortly after the war, he served with the Army Air Corp. He was a member of the Leominster Lodge of Elks, American Legion Post 151, the Sterling Grange and the No. 6 Community Center.

Mr. Boyden was an installation and maintenance technician for New England Telephone until his retirement in 1976. Later, he obtained a certificate of completion from the University of Massachusetts Agricultural Extension Program. As a Master Gardener, he advised the public on the growth and maintenance of flowers and vegetable plants. He often would participate on juried panels at various flower shows throughout the state. In addition, he worked for ten years as the groundskeeper supervisor at Whalom Park. Simultaneously, he was the orchard manager at Sholan Farms and a part-time employee at the Farmers’ Exchange. His charitable contributions included the Salvation Army, community food banks, and fuel assistance for those in need.

Mr. Boyden is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Janeann (Faherty) Boyden; five sons, Thomas J. Boyden and significant other, Kathleen Herard of Leominster, Charles C. Boyden and wife, Maureen (Kerrigan) of Pelham, NH, William B. Boyden and significant other, Vivian Civita of Leominster, David W. Boyden and wife, Julie (Fraser) of Leominster, Kevin F. Boyden and wife, Carmem Felicia of Leominster; three daughters, Janeanne (Boyden) Arsenault and husband, Michael of Leominster, Roberta M. Beyroutey and husband, Frederick of Leominster, Kathleen A. Gallant and husband, Stephen of Leominster; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Mr. Boyden was predeceased by his daughter, Claire A. (Boyden) Price in 1997; two sisters, Claire (Boyden) Renaud in 1990 and Jeanne (Boyden) Murray Doyle in 2007.

The family would like to extend a special thank-you to VNA Care Network, particularly Mary Beth Carafello, R.N., and the doctors and nurses at Leominster Hospital. Robert received excellent care from Doctors Fraser, Castellanos, Saltin, Mercandante, Ebb and most especially, Dr. Shipen Li, who provided endless support and care to Robert and his family.
