Art association announces details of May meeting

Submitted to The Champion

The Leominster Art Association will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 17 at St. Leo’s Fr. John E. Doran Center Gym, 108-116 Main St. (Route 12), Leominster.

This month’s demonstrator is Alicia Drakiotes, using her “broken color technique” in pastels. Drakiotes is an award-winning New Hampshire artist and art educator who has enjoyed many exhibitions in the New England states. Whether painting en plein air or watching the waves crash against the rocks, her work has a feeling all its own. She is drawn to the natural beauty of the landscapes and seacoast. Often her works incorporate subjects such as faulting stone foundations or other representations that time if of the essence. This interest is further developed in her “Vintage Americana” series, which portrays weathered buildings and aging automotive subjects discovered in the rural landscape. It her natural response to her environment, and the reality that life changes all.

The use of vibrant colors and the flexibility of application in both pastel and oil paintings allow her greater expressiveness. Most recent works incorporate an under-painting where the “broken color technique” applied allows part of the under-painting to show through the finished piece.

Drakiotes is featured locally in several annual solo exhibitions. She has won regional awards for her oil paintings, monotypes and pastels, and has been juried into several prestigious national and international exhibitions. Her studio is located in Marlborough, New Hampshire.

Refreshments will be served by Patty Ardinger and Claire Caron.

There is a $5 guest fee for nonmembers that may be applied toward membership.
