Schedule set for Ward 2 City Council special election

Wayne Nickel Wayne Nickel The passing of longtime Ward 2 City Councilor Wayne Nickel on Dec. 17 means a special election will be held in the spring to choose his successor.

The election is scheduled for Tuesday, May 9 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to the schedule approved by the eight remaining City Council members Monday night.

Nomination papers for the seat that represents French Hill and the area around The Mall at Whitney Field are available at the city clerk’s office at Leominster City Hall. Forms with the signatures of at least 50 registered voters in Ward 2 must be returned to the Board of Registrars no later than 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 21.

The deadline to file nomination papers, including a statement of candidacy, with City Clerk Lynn Bouchard is 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 4. The list of candidates will be posted Wednesday, April 5, and the next day, April 6, is the last day to file withdrawals or objections as a candidate in the election. The order of candidates on the ballot will be determined during a drawing on Friday, April 7.

The last day for Ward 2 residents to register to vote in the special election is Wednesday, April 19. The deadline to request an absentee ballot is noon Monday, May 8.

Unlike the November election for state and federal seats, early voting will not be available for the special election.
